Wednesday is when things got exciting. Eve called me that night to let me know that she would be returning to the states on Tuesday. She needs to go back to help her daughter deal with some things. It's not an emergency yet, but she wants to go back before it becomes one. Please be praying for Eve, her daughter, and Mike and Jeremy as they're staying in Sentani. She's not planning to come back until mid-June. So that means that I'm on my own for the last 2 weeks. Eve has prepared me well that I feel comfortable (even confident!) doing that. I was concerned that those hours wouldn't count because Eve wouldn't be available, but I checked with our internship coordinator and she said that because Eve has supervised so many of my hours already, these will still count. Praise the Lord!
Thursday and Friday were busy finishing reports and getting things ready for Eve to leave. There were lots of little loose ends that needed to get tied up. Thursday night Joyce came over the made Krupuk for me. They're little things you fry in oil that puff up (kinda like a Cheeto) when you cook them. They're very light and very good!

Frying Krupuk

Go ahead. Try one.
Friday morning was rough - I got an e-mail from my mom that my dad was back in the hospital with atrial fluttering - his heart was beating too fast. They gave him some meds, and eventually did some sort of electrodes thing to zap his heart back into normal rhythm. The doctor said it "worked like a charm." Amen! Even though I knew that it worked, the news still took its toll on me....I cried to Joel over the phone and then to my neighbor Joyce, who was able to give me a nice long hug. They both prayed for me and my dad. Friday night I went to the game and enjoyed talking with Kevin about some of the topics from our professional development sessions that afternoon (the 5 languages of forgiveness, asking good questions, empathetic listening). When I got home I realized how tired I was, and laid down to rest at 9:30. But I didn't get up again until 11. I would've slept through the night except I had to talk with Joel. ;)
Saturday I got to go to Ifar with Eve and some friends who were visiting. Ifar is where the Allied troops were headquartered during WWII under General MacArthur. There are some foundations still left up there, and an information place with some pictures. But the view is amazing! It's easy to see why Gen. MacArthur was headquartered there. That night was the talent show. It was very entertaining - a "Papua Bugs" song (to the tune of "These are a few of my favorite things") and break dancing by some elementary students to Monty-Python like sketches, reliving the Beatles, and a spoonerism retelling of "Prinderella and the Cince." Eve and I got together after the talent show and finalized everything - we were at the school til midnight!

At Ifar
Sunday was pretty laid back, but today has brought more adventures. The first day of Camp HOPE (for MEW) went pretty well, but we figured out a few things to tweak for tomorrow. Keep praying! I got an e-mail from my mom that the Knife River was rising and that they had the sandbags up and were trying to decide weather to stay or leave. I just talked with her again, and my dad and Hunter are pumping water, and the sandbags aren't doing what they'd hoped. She was calling to recruit help and more pumps, so she couldn't talk long. Please pray that we find help (my dad probably shouldn't be doing all this with all the health issues he's had lately), and that the river will crest soon and the damage will be minimal. Also pray for safety and wisdom for my family as they fight the flood. My mom said they're expecting slightly higher levels than the 97 flood, which I thought was plenty high. Lord, have mercy!
On the positive side, Eve brought me the batik outfits I had made. I love them! But that was the last time I'll see her....we had to say goodbye as she leaves tomorrow morning. I'm really going to miss her. She's been a wonderful mentor and friend (and resident mom). She's been such a blessing to me in so many ways. I had to visit the nurses today because I have red bumps around my ankles and feet. They're from bites I got while hiking last week, but they were getting worse instead of better, and itching more. They actually look pretty bad - they're red, blotchy, and bumpy - I really do look diseased. The nurses were slightly concerned that it could get infected, so they gave me some calmide lotion (like calamine) to dry it out and some Benedryl and told me to keep an eye on it. You can pray for that too, if you want. ;)

From bites...

...to bumps
So, that's a run-down of my past week. Please be praying for the various things I mentioned....I know there are a lot. I appreciate it so much. Hopefully I won't have so much to report next week. God bless!
